Studying Social Media

Understanding and harnessing social media… I’m not sure that anyone has completely wrapped his mind around the role of social media in our lives, much less in education, but I don’t think we’re doing our students any favors by ignoring it. Look at the use of Twitter and Facebook during the World Cup. In The Verge’s article about the World Cup and social media use, the demographic breakdown provides many insights.

If nothing else, studying social media results can create interesting conversations in our classrooms.

Look back at The Verge’s article again. Notice which countries aren’t using social media during the World Cup. What can we infer about these areas of the world? How might lack of resources impact the lives of the people who live there? How are companies like Google and Facebook trying to solve this problem? What other world events have prompted numbers like this?
